adolf hitler
He was trying to unite Europe under HIM! He believed that the financial depression of the 30's was the result of poor managment and that he along with some of his assistants could manage Europe far better than anyone else. He was willing to destroy anyone that he considered inferior to achieve his goals. He killed millions of Jews and stole their wealth to pay for his war.
He wasn't particularly "important" to the rest of the world, except as a target and as a face for all of the NAZI atrocities. Although Hitler went after the Jews, he considered everyone to be inferior who wasn't like him.
It's interesting that today's Neo-NAZI's are willing to revere Hitler, when in fact he would have considered most of them to be little more than monkeys. Hitler didn't just hate the Jews, he hated and wanted to destroy everyone who wasn't Aryan, and really disliked the French.

AND
vladmir lenin
He was heavily educated in European politics and the changing paradigms in government in his day, forseeing the conflict between the establishment and their failure to satisfy workers in an increasingly dangerous work environment.
He saw his chance when the Russian government was enacting democratic reforms, saw it as a sign of weakness, and fermented a democratic revolution in Russia. Later, he consolidated his power and put in place a permanent one party Bolshevik government. This coup de ta caused a red scare in America and fermented violent anti-communist sentiment in Europe, especially in Germany. A lot of people feared the assent of communism in Russia would bring revolution to them, and this had a major impact on Hitler's decision to expand east to fight the Russians, as well as the American's ever eastward presence to contain the Communist influence from spreading to their major allies in the west.
Communism shaped the 20th century by influencing western militaristic democracies to fight the potential threat, this means Hitler's eastern front, the cold war, and many other reactionary conflict from the 20th century. It caused fear for great powers because there were powerful ideas in the concept of communism which were popular with the oppressed. Lenin was the man who brought conventional communism to the world stage and made it reality for the West.
